Purple Mums For Planting

Blooming purpleĀ  Mums or Chrysanthemums available at Wiesner Bros. Nursery Inc.

Chrysanthemums (Dendranthema grandiflorum) are a colorful and vibrant perennial flower, originally hailing from Asia. Chrysanthemums are championed in a fall garden for their variety. Chrysanthemums, also known as mums, are available in a vast array of flower types and colors, offering a vibrant and multi-faceted design to your garden while keeping plant care the same across the board. Mums are grown in almost every color but blue.
Chrysanthemum breeds have flowers that are anywhere from tubular petals to pompons. Despite the large variety of styles, mums all should be treated in the same way, and will grow well no matter what type it is, if cared for properly. Most gardeners treat the mums as an annual due to space limitations, however they are a true perennial.
Mums prefer full to part sun and well-drained soil. They need about 1 inch of water per week, weather permitting. Chrysanthemums are fall perennials that bloom towards the end of the season and bring a lot of color while the trees go bare. Highly-phosphorus fertilizer helps the mums grow and stay strong in the winter. When planting mums outdoors, plant in soil that is not dense, and plant 8-12 inches into the ground. Removing dying buds can help promote growth and strength in the flowers. Mums grown year-round will need to be divided every 2-3 years. Divide in the spring after the last of the winter frost. Dig up the whole plant at the center and separate the plants with a sharp spade. Discard the original center and plant the outer parts in newer soil.
