If you are looking for a colorful focal point to your yard in the hot summer months, look no further than the Crape Myrtle. Our climate is about as far north as this tree can survive, so it is a good idea to take advantage of all it has to offer. It’s flowers bloom in an assortment of colors based on species, its leaves provide a beautiful autumnal display, and the bark of the tree is soft and colorful. It can be an excellent addition to any landscape. One of the few trees that have a summer bloom time, most plants bloom in the spring.

Summer

Colors of the Crape Myrtle flowers range from pink to purple, red to white and everything in between. The bark of a Crape Myrtle is often smooth, with a cinnamon or light grey coloration. The plant usually reaches full color in July to August, in the full heat of the summer; but its incredible beauty continues throughout the year.

Autumn

As autumn sets in, the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange, gold, and red; complementing the bark below wonderfully. In some species, the leaves may even turn to a dark purple.

Winter

In the winter time, the tree lies dormant but the bare branches and trunk show its color strikingly well against the white backdrop of snowfall. The leaves begin to grow back in the late spring; and can be quite the focal point in your yard.
