Today, September 23rd, is the first day of Autumn. With the changing seasons comes the transformation of the colors around us. As the leaves change and the air cools, we are surrounded by golds, reds, and browns. We all love to see the colors change and the falling leaves; at least until we have to rake them up and clean them out of the gutters. Which trees produce the most beautiful colors in the Fall?
Acer palmatumn
The Japanese Maple is a beautiful tree throughout the year, whimsically twisted and covered with dark green leaves. In the Fall, the leaves turn either a deep red or a fiery orange depending on the species. The orange leaves of certain species are tipped with red that completes the the beautiful display to look like flame.
Acer rubrum
The Red Maple is a fast growing tree that grows well in a variety of soils. The tree produces amazingly beautiful leaves in a deep red in the fall. The trees can grow large enough to be used as a great shade tree, and the trunk grows straight and smooth, unlike the Japanese Maple. They produce light green leaves in the in the Spring.
Stewartia pseudocamellia
The Stewartia tree is native to Japan, producing linear-shaped leaves that change from light green to reds, golds, and purples. They grow flowers during the midsummer heat, with golden cores surrounded by white petals. As the tree grows, the bark grows to show strips of color, ranging from grey, to orange, to rust.
Ginko biloba
The Gingko tree, also known as the Maidenhair tree; is an endangered species native to China. It produces fan-shaped leaves, which change to a striking yellow in the Fall.
